Kim Crenshaw and Spike,
Spike the Papillon was the first toy dog for obedience trainer Kim Crenshaw, who had previously trained two Labs and a Golden. He has taught her a lot about the differences in training methods between large dogs and Toys! Spike earned his AKC Tracking Dog Title in Nashville, TN on a rainy day in March 1995 (pictured above left). It was Spike's first performance event title and Kim's first Tracking title. Spike earned his CD in the Fall of 1996 with three scores of 195 or higher. He was often High Scoring Toy in Trial. He finished his CD in Knoxville, TN with a 196. Spike earned his CDX in two weekends in Nashville, TN March 28 & 29th, 1998 and in Perry, GA April 9th-11th, 1998. Spike's first leg in Nashville was a 2nd place with a 193.5 followed by a 1st place the following day with a score of 198. Spike's Open scores were all in the 190's, with an average of 194. They were training for Utility in 1999. Spike and Kim went from their first ever agility trial in April of 1998 to competing in both Excellent classes in just one year in only five trials. Spike won his jump height division at the Puperoni Regional Agility Championships a year later in May of 1999 and took 2nd place at the National Puperoni Classic Agility Championship in Indianapolis, IN in November 1999. When he was retired due to a stroke in December 2000, Spike had 5 legs each on his MX and MXJ, five "Double Qs" and was actively working towards his MACH title. Recovering enough from his stroke to play the game a little, Spike has been showing in the preferred jumpers classes on a limited basis and has earned his NJP. Due to vision and balance problems resulting from the stroke, he will not be moved up to a higher level nor shown in standard classes, but it sure is fun to see him zoom around the jumpers courses again at warp speed. It makes us remember both the year Spike was at the top of the game and the days we wondered if he would even be able to walk again. We are truly blessed to see him doing so well. Snail Mail: P. O.
